Rev. James Shannon family papers, 1823-1864.

The collection consists of papers of James Shannon and the Shannon family from 1823-1864. Papers pertaining to James Shannon include correspondence (1836-1858), sermons (ca. 1823-1828), diary of sermons preached (1830-1857), essays and writings, and addresses and speeches. Some of these materials document his presidency at the College of Louisiana, University of Missouri, and Bacon College. Materials pertaining to Frances Cary Moore Shannon include original correspondence (1836-1864) mainly to her family in Athens, Georgia and transcripts of letters of the Shannon and Moore families (1836-1861) mainly to Frances, James, and their daughter Eugenia from various family members including Frances' mother, Frances Tabb Cary Moore and her sister Mary Henrietta Moore.

James Shannon (1799-1859), educator and clergyman, in 1857 married Frances Cary Moore, daughter of Alsa and Frances Tabb Cary Moore of Athens, Georgia. Shannon was professor of Ancient Languages, University of Georgia (1830-1835); President of the College of Louisiana (1835-1840); President of Bacon College, Harrodsburg, Kentucky (1840-1850); President of University of Missouri (1850-1856); and President of Christian University, Canton, Missouri (1856-1859). Historical note: Bacon College was chartered in 1837 in Georgetown, Kentucky. Its founder was Thornton F. Johnson, a member of the Disciples of Christ who resigned from Georgetown College in order to establish an institution independent of the Baptists who administered Georgetown. Bacon College moved to Harrodsburg, Kentucky in 1839 and graduated its first students two years later.
